Recommendations for Industry

Q. I’ve seen that some businesses are beginning large-scale testing of employees to detect potential asymptomatic cases of COVID-19. Should I be doing this? 

A. As critical infrastructure businesses, food companies face a very complex balance between the need to maintain the food supply and to protect public health. Because of this, there are some essential factors that businesses should consider in COVID-19 testing, the most critical of which is that you consider what you will do with the results before testing. This holds true for any such testing, be it viral testing for current infection or antibody testing for previous infection.

To determine this, one option for detecting asymptomatic persons while considering the impact on the food supply is to conduct rolling testing. This could be testing employees in one area of the plant, or a certain percentage of employees, one week; then another group or percentage another week. 

 

Another consideration would be to look at testing through the lens of your local community. If your community is at, say, a 15% infection rate, you are likely to find at least this percentage among your employees. So, again, what will you do with those results?
